Combating child pornography and finding sex offenders on the Internet
4/25/2008 8:50:32 AM
If you search the word “sex” using Yahoo Search, nothing less than 1,490,000,000 websites will be listed. Using Google Search, another list of 714,000,000 websites comes up for “sex”. Millions of websites are purely pornographic. Many are dedicated to expose teens using graphical sexual content. The Internet is an important means of communication between all kinds of people: good and bad.
If your teen can use the Internet by himself, there is a chance that some day, he will find one of those websites and probably watch pornography. Using proper Internet security options, parents can block inadequate content for children, but the criminal and his “products “ are still out there. He is making money from the exploitation of children by generating child pornography for adults. Behind the scenes, all kinds of illicit activities are providing those websites with “content”.
Potential sex offenders find the Internet an ideal way to target many children at one time; it is where they start to “groom” their potential victims. Parents must pay close attention to how children are using Internet resources and to whom they talk to by email, instant messages or chat rooms.
On the law enforcement side, the federal government and some states have good laws prohibiting the sexual exploitation of children and they fight against child pornography. Several law-enforcement agencies are very busy working together and targeting the outlaws, but unfortunately, it is not enough as the Internet expands each day without complete vigilance.
